2020 NYC PANDEMIC BOOK

New Book Out Now!!!

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
-George Santayana

For the last half of 2020 every building in downtown New York, fearing looting and vandalism in the wake of the summer’s riots, was boarded up with plywood, .

The sight of the city’s glass canyons skinned in splintery armor was missed by those sheltering in place during COVID and those able to flee the city at the start of the unrest. A year later, many of those who did remain and witness remember the summer’s events as through a haze, society’s collective memories clouded by dissociation from a year of global trauma.

”SHUT UP” documents the improvised store facades of 2020 New York. It does this as an aesthetic exploration of repeated forms in the tradition of Bernd and Hila Becher, and also as record of a series of events that if remembered, may hopefully be prevented from repeating.
